Studies and training

Anyone is invited to participate in our studies. Just show up and make some new friends! We always work to be inclusive of different points of view, and to respect one another.

Studies:

Students: Mondays, 8 p.m. in the Conference Room, hosted by students, with Pastor Jeremymaking-sense-cover there as a resource. Right now spending six weeks on Adam Hamilton’s book, Making Sense of the Bible. This is an intentionally open, welcoming, affirming Bible-oriented group, totally non-threatening for agnostics, and anyone with questions about the Christian faith and tradition.

Bible studies, just finished the book of Acts, and spent a few weeks on a quick introduction to Islam and the Qur’an. Now we’re heading into the short book of James. This is usually a verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter Bible study led by the pastor, with great discussion and open-mindedness, covering historical, theological, and real-life issues brought up by the texts.

  • 8 a.m. Tuesdays at Biggby in the back room, on Michigan Avenue.
  • 1:15 p.m. Wednesdays at Superior Street Apartments (please call the church office for directions).

 Sunday after worship:

Every Sunday during the school year, a group of adults gathers at 11:30 to discuss the message of the day. Sometimes, there’s a book involved besides the Bible. Here are our upcoming book series:

cover225x225Four Loves, by CS Lewis, starting November 6, Sunday mornings after worship for four weeks. Beginning in November, the sermon series will begin, following the last four chapters of the book, which is available online, or pick one up at the study. We will be buying some in advance.

half-truths-coverHalf Truths, by Adam Hamilton, starting January 29, for five weeks. This is a challenge to some of the popular statements made by Christians, that many folks think are biblical, but mostly aren’t. Some of these half-truths can be very hurtful indeed for someone who is grieving, including, “Everything happens for a reason,” and, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” We will copies available for purchase.
